Foundations of Learning

zz Academics: Approach to Learning

St. Michaels University School believes that every one of our students has the ability to excel. We also recognize that the path to excellence will be different for each of us, which is why we are highly adaptive in our approach to education.

We offer an academic program that is demanding, stimulating, and engaging. It challenges students intellectually and encourages them to reach their full academic potential as it provides them with rich learning experiences in a wide variety of subject areas, including an extensive slate of Advanced Placement courses at the Senior School.

Teachers employ a wide repertoire of teaching and learning strategies, and students are actively involved in the learning process. Beginning in kindergarten, the academic program is designed to build literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills, as well as to provide students with the opportunity to study music, computers, social studies, languages and many other subject areas as part of the core curriculum.

Junior School

zz Learning: Junior School

The Junior School offers a vibrant learning environment in which children, teachers, parents and staff work together to create a joyful and exciting atmosphere. We continually strive to find the best in each child and our students bring enthusiasm and energy to school each day.

Our goal is to create confident, successful and enthusiastic lifelong learners by supporting:

  • social and emotional development;
  • physical growth;
  • curiosity;
  • exploration; and
  • learning.

Middle School

zz Learning at the Middle School Philosophy and Goals

Students in Grades 6-8 require a range of courses to stimulate their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social needs. To fully develop each student’s abilities, we provide an age-specific academic atmosphere and an outstanding student-teacher ratio. Every student receives the support they require to reach their potential.

All students contribute to the life of the school, pursue interests beyond the classroom and develop good relationships with their peers. Our faculty enjoy their energetic students and frequently interact with them inside and outside the classroom.

Senior School

zz Senior School Academics: Philosophy and Goals

At the Senior School level, the primary goal is to prepare our students for the rigours of post-secondary education. In addition to meeting the BC Provincial Ministry of Education's requirements, we offer a range of additional courses including our Advanced Placement program.

By the end of their Grade 12 year, we want our students to have:

  • a strong academic record;
  • demonstrated leadership abilities;
  • a breadth of extracurricular experience;
  • a clear plan for their post-secondary future;
  • strong study and time management skills; and
  • experience with local or international service.

Within the academic framework of the Senior School, opportunities are provided for student leadership and community work, as well as excellence in sport and in the fine arts. Senior School students are actors, athletes, musicians, and artists as well as determined scholars.
