St. Michaels University School is a Canadian pioneer and leader in the Advanced Placement (AP) programme:

  • The first school in Canada to adopt AP (1978)
  • The top independent school in Canada for the size of our programme (221 students, 41% of the student body, wrote 569 exams in 2009)
  • In the top five schools in Canada for the breadth of our course offerings (23 courses)

The performance of SMUS students on AP exams is consistently higher than the world average:

  • 84% of our students scored a 3, 4 or 5 on their AP exams, compared to just 59% of students worldwide.
  • 20 of our students received National AP Scholar awards, granted to students who receive scores of 4 or higher on five or more of AP exams and have an overall average of at least 4.

As a university preparatory school, SMUS believes that Advanced Placement is the best way to prepare our students for the challenges of higher learning:

  • Research shows that students who take AP courses have better four-year graduation rates than those who did not take AP.
  • A 2008 study showed graduation rates for AP English Literature students were 62 percent higher than graduation rates for those who took other English courses in high school.

Not only do our students enter university better prepared, they also earn credit and advanced university placement through their participation in the AP programme:

  • More than 90 percent of four-year US colleges and universities grant credit or placement for qualifying AP exam scores
  • Universities from more than 55 countries recognize AP results for credit and advanced placement
  • More than 10,000 exam results were received by more than 60 Canadian universities in 2009
