OverviewThe Middle School is a learning environment for approximately 200 students in Grades 6-8. We strive to provide a supportive atmosphere uniquely suited to the needs of this age group. A key feature of the Middle School is the small number of students and the outstanding student-teacher ratio. The classes are small and provide students with the support they require to reach their potential. The Middle School is a hub of activity, from early morning until well after the regular school day is over. We believe that students at the Middle School stage of their education and development require a broad range of courses to stimulate their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social needs. Accordingly, the Middle School programme is comprehensive and includes limited optional subjects. In Grade 6 students are required to take Mathematics, Science, Humanities (English and Social Studies), French, Japanese or Mandarin, Music (Band or Strings), Art, Physical Education, Information Literacy and Technology, Health and Career Education, Choir, and Exploratory. In Grades 7 and 8, the only key change is that Japanese or Mandarin becomes optional and students may instead elect to take Communication Skills, an enriched Language Arts course. The Middle School day is a full one, beginning at 8:00 am and ending well into the afternoon, depending upon commitments to our athletic teams. Students are expected to contribute to the life of the school as a way to pursue interests beyond the classroom and to interact with peers to develop healthy relationships. At SMUS, the teachers, staff and faculty get to know the students very quickly and interact with them both inside and outside the classroom. The students love being here and the faculty love teaching this exciting and energetic age group. I invite you to explore the Middle School by choosing a theme from the menu above.
