ISPY Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do you ensure the safety and security
of the students, especially in the evening and after school?
Each day after classes are finished, we have
house parents on duty who ensure that students check in to the
building. In the evening, we have dinner, some quiet study time,
and then some type of activity. This is followed by preparations
for bed time. The house parents carefully monitor the students'
presence, and check them into their rooms at night. The doors
are monitored by security camera, and the back doors have an
alarm so that if anyone leaves, the alarm will sound.
How are the boys and girls dormitories separated?
Boys and girls are in one building, which is
physically divided into a boys and girls side. Students are not
allowed in the rooms of the opposite sex but can mingle in common
areas.
Where are washrooms located in the residences?
Each double room has its own bathroom and shower.
Is the food buffet style or is there a choice
between two options?
The food served in the cafeteria is delicious
and nutritious. There are always two choices of hot food entrée,
and there is always a vegetarian option. We also have a full
self-serve salad bar with eight different types of salads and
vegetables. There are two choices of dessert, and a variety of
hot and cold drinks. We also serve a mid-morning snack and an
evening snack just before bed time.
Can children have a second helping?
Yes.
Are there any beverages?
Cold beverages include lemonade, ice tea, water,
and milk. We also have tea, coffee, hot apple cider, and hot
chocolate. Soft drinks are not available on campus.
Where are all of the facilities located?
Are they inside the campus or do students need to leave the school?
All of our facilities are located on our beautiful
campus.
Can you describe the activities, schedule,
visits and how many hours of English instruction there are each
day?
The students begin studying at 8:30 am and
finish at 4:00 pm, with a one hour break for lunch. This is the
schedule from Monday to Friday. On some days, there are field
trips, and afternoons are often spent doing musical activities
or playing language games. This provides some variety from sitting
in a classroom all day long. Please see the sample
schedule.
For the weekends, how do you maintain safety?
Boarding staff are on duty 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Students must sign in and out when they leave
the boarding house for any reason (for example to go to class).
Students are always supervised in small groups by an adult staff
member when they leave the campus.
What is the schedule?
On weekends, there are organized activities
on Saturday and Sunday. Please see the sample
schedule.
Can students leave the school at any time?
Usually, students only leave campus for an
organized activity. They are not allowed to leave campus without
a supervisor. If they need to go to the store for a special reason,
or have some other personal errand, we try to incorporate it
into one of the regularly scheduled outings. Otherwise, the student
is assigned a special adult escort, but this happens very rarely.
Are the activities and classes compulsory?
Yes. However, if a student is not allowed to
do an activity for some reason (eg, swimming), then we make alternate
arrangements for him or her.
How much free time do students get?
Students have about one hour after classes
in the afternoon, and a couple of free hours on the weekend between
meals and organized activities.
During the visits and excursions, are students
ever left alone?
Students are always divided into groups and
assigned an adult supervisor or assistant.
What are the qualifications of teachers and
monitors?
All of our teachers have BC Teaching Certificates
and are members of the BC College of Teachers. Our Senior Boarding
Staff come from a variety of backgrounds, but all have completed
an undergraduate degree. They all receive extensive training
for their role.
Your web page mentions local Canadian students.
What classes or activities are they involved in?
Local Canadian students sometimes help out
in the classroom as conversation partners or teaching assistants.
They also participate in the afternoon, evening, and weekend
field trips.
How many students took part last summer
(2008)?
Approximately 70 students. Most were boarding
students, but we also had 12 day students who participated.
Where do your students come from?
In the summer of 2008, there were students
from Japan, Germany, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Mexico, China (including
Macua and Hong Kong) and Turkey
Do international students get together with
students from day camps?
No.
What activities are involved in recreation?
Please see sample
schedule.
Is there any disco or party activity?
We have evening activities, but don't tend
to call them 'parties'.
What is the schedule for going to bed and
waking up?
Wake up 7 am; lights out 9:45 or 10:00 pm
How do you monitor the students at night?
Evening staff are on duty until midnight; Each
floor has security cameras, and the outside doors have an alarm.
There are boarding staff living on each floor in each dormitory.
They are on call during the night.
How much extra spending money do the students
need for a six-week summer programme for their expenses?
All of the food, transportation, and activities
are covered in the tuition. The only money required is spending
money for personal items such as toothpaste, a snack at the movies,
or shopping for pleasure. Some students bring as little as $100,
some as much as $1000. This is really a personal preference.
Can the students have internet access in
their room?
We prefer that students do not bring personal
computers with them. There is a classroom of computers for sending
e-mail that is available during quiet times if necessary. Students
don't have time to be playing computer games or spending a lot
of time chatting on the computer.
Can the students use cellular phones in the
school?
Cell phones are not allowed in the classroom,
but the students can bring a cell phone with them while they
are in Canada to facilitate communication with home. However,
if the use of them becomes a problem, they will be held and returned
to the student when he or she departs.
Regarding dates of payment and cancellation
policy, people usually make plans for the summer in May or June,
sometimes even one week before a summer programme starts. How
flexible can you be about this?
We will be as flexible as we can, but when
the residence is full, we cannot accept any more students. So,
the sooner the students register, the better! Please see our
Cancellation Policy for details on refunds.
