We believe community involvement - both international and local - is a crucial part of a SMUS education. Serving the needs of others, particularly through direct action, is one of the foundations of our school.

Goals

The service leadership stream aims to instill in our students both a desire to better the world around them and an understanding of the complexity of the issues that we must face.

• To foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility and a lifelong ability to serve others
• To broaden perspectives, leadership skills and character
• To facilitate diverse and age-appropriate service experiences which are accessible to all
• To provide opportunities which improve both the quality of life and the environment in our external communities
• To build a connection between student learning and service through experiential activities

Structure

Service naturally ties into academic, leadership, environmental, experiential, arts, athletic and outdoor pursuits. In this way, service finds its way into much of our daily curriculum.

Service initiatives also take place within common themes:

• Cancer awareness
• Local, regional and international issues (with particular support for disadvantaged people)
• Service leadership and volunteering

These activities take the direction of different individuals under the guidance of the Director of School or Director of Service.

Overall, our service programme aims to create students who are globally literate, civic-minded and socially responsible, both now and throughout their lives as members of our global community.
