zz Arts: Music Intro
Music is part of our daily life at SMUS. Passion, creativity, skill and precision all come into play through our ongoing engagement with music. Student musicians perform at formal concerts, create original music for service fundraisers, and play for peers during lunch-time concerts. Our courses cover technique, history and theory.
Most students who join SMUS in Grade 9 or 10 usually have between 2-4 years of musical experience. All Grade 9 students are required to take band, strings or choir. At the Grade 11/12 level, some courses require auditions and acceptance is at the discretion of the music director. For students who want to study solo repertoire, SMUS can organize private lessons with accredited professionals.
Visual Arts
We are extremely proud of our student artists. Their talents decorate our entire campus and their work has been seen in professional galleries around the city. Through Advanced Placement, students create incredible portfolios capable of earning them entrance to fine art universities around the world.
Theatre
From small, student-run productions on our campus, to huge scale musicals at the McPherson, we offer students many opportunities to showcase talents on and behind the stage.
Writing
Our creative writing program has produced some incredible authors, including Governor General Award-winner Ken Oppel '85. Through our English department, students craft stories and poems which they enter in national and international contests and publications.
