Appleyard |
Anthony V. Appleyard was an alumnus of St. Michaels School ('32). This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Bateman |
Robert Bateman is a prominent Canadian artist and environmentalist. This award is given to a student entering Grade 12 who is involved in the outdoors and environmental issues. |

Burrell (Jessiman) |
This endowment was started by the Jessiman family and is named after Rae Jessiman's parents; Richard and Irma Burrell. Two Jessiman children attended SMUS. The award is given to a current student at SMUS who exhibits academic excellence and commitment to SMUS. |

Challoner |
This endowment was created in the memory of Russell Challoner, an alumnus of 1953. He was a Canadian Air Force pilot who died in a plane crash in 1977. His father attended the school from 1908-1913. This award is given to a good all-rounder. |

Class Funds |
The following classes have bursary funds and the award from each class fund must be made to a child of alumni: 1970, 1985, 1987, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 |

Considine |
Chris Considine is an alumnus ('70). This award is given to a Middle or Senior School student who is a good all-rounder and totally committed to SMUS. |

Cropper |
Leonard Cropper was a well respected teacher at University School from 1941 to 1956. This award is given to a student from Salt Spring Island, and if one is not available then can be given to a student from Greater Victoria. |

Duke |
Christine Duke died of leukemia in January, 1986 (in her Grade 12 year). She was popular, talented and a good athlete. This award goes to a student who displays academic excellence and spirited leadership. |

Dyson |
Ron Dyson was a math teacher and tutor at SMUS for many years. He was highly respected by both staff and students for his gentlemanly manner. This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Hassett |
The award is named for Liam Hassett who was an alumnus of 1996 and died suddenly in 2001 during army training at CFB Trenton. This award goes to a student who has completed at least one year at SMUS and is an all-rounder with a sense of humour. |

Kingham |
Ian Kingham attended the school 1943-1951 as did his father before him. Ian left money in his estate to finance the start of this bursary fund. This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Middleton |
Andrew Middleton ('95) died in a car accident in 2000. This award goes to a hardworking student of average ability who needs financial assistance. |

Parents’ Auxiliary |
The PA includes current and past parents or guardians of SMUS students. Over the years the PA has fundraised to benefit the students of all three schools. This award is given to a student who might not otherwise be financially able to attend SMUS. |

Penaluna |
David Penaluna taught at St. Michaels University School from 1978 to 1988 and was Headmaster 1988-1994. This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Shergold Class of 2003 |
Stephanie Shergold ('03) was a courageous and remarkable person who will be forever remembered and honoured each year with the awarding of a bursary to a student who exhibits her qualities and strengths. |

Skinner |
Colin Skinner was a drama coach and teacher at SMUS from 1976-2001. This award is given to a gifted drama student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Symons |
Named for members of the Symons family. This award is given to a student in the Middle or Senior School. This student should be a good team player, enthusiastic and eager to support the school community. |

Timmis |
John J. Timmis was Headmaster of University School from 1948 until 1970. This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Walsh |
Michael Walsh was a teacher/coach/houseparent at SMUS 1968-1988 and 1995-2002. This award is given to a good student with proven athletic ability. |

Wenman |
W. R. G. (Reg) Wenman was a student (US 1912-1920) and staff member (1925-1971). This award is given to a deserving student who qualifies for financial assistance. |

Williams |
Douglas Williams was a member of staff at SMUS (1972-1996); Director of residence and Deputy Headmaster. This award is given to a Senior School boarder, who is an all-rounder with a record of community service. |

Wilson |
Rob Wilson was a member of staff at SMUS (1958-1965, and 1974-1999). He was acting Headmaster of SMUS on two occasions. This award is given to a boarding student in the Senior School who displays all-round ability. |
