Past SMUS Parent
Since:
October, 2015 (start of third term)

Cathy, her husband Paul Flanagan and their son Eamon have been residents of Victoria since 2006. Before moving to Victoria, Cathy spent many years at Intrawest ULC in Vancouver, a destination resorts, development and management company.

Cathy's love of the outdoors led to a long career in the ski business starting with teaching and coaching in Aspen and Whistler. Along the way she held various roles including director of marketing for Whistler Mountain, executive director and director of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, and finally vice-president of strategic alliances and partner marketing for Intrawest. Cathy's responsibilities at Intrawest included creating, developing and leading strategic partnerships that resulted in numerous major sponsorships across Intrawest's North American ski, golf and beach resorts. This work included leading a head office team and resort teams to meet the joint objectives of major sponsors and resorts.

Her work as the executive director of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation included building the organization from the ground up and developing annual fundraising events that continue today, and are responsible for significant financial support of charities along the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. After leaving the executive director role she was invited to join the Foundation's board of directors, a position she held for 10 years until moving to Victoria.

Cathy's strengths lie in the areas of business development, relationship management, and building partnerships that deliver benefits for multiple stakeholders. She has been a committed member of the SMUS community since her son joined the school. She chaired the annual SMUS Christmas Celebration in 2007 and in 2008 when the day and boarding communities joined the celebration together for the first time. Cathy is also past president of the Parents' Auxiliary. She has a diploma of Applied Sciences, Outdoor Recreation Management from Capilano University.
