International Summer Programs for Youth (ISPY) Coordinator

This is a temporary part-time vacancy over two terms of work. Start date: mid-May.

  • Work Term 1: May 21 - June 28. 10-20 hours per week for six weeks (flexible schedule).
  • Work Term 2: July 2 - August 23. 37.5 hours per week for eight weeks.

Tasks and Responsibilities

ISPY is an intensive, six-week residential language and culture program based at St. Michaels University School. Youth between the ages of 8 and 18 from all over the world attend the program in order to improve their English language competency, make new friends, and have a fulfilling intercultural experience. The ISPY Coordinator fulfills a key role for this busy program. The ISPY Coordinator is responsible for creating a safe, culturally sensitive environment and bridges the gap between the boarding community and the ISPY administrative office. This position works with other coordinators to ensure the smooth operation of all the transportation, accommodation, and dining arrangements during the summer.

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies

Preference will be given to candidates who meet the definition of a student as outlined below.

  • At least one year of undergraduate studies.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities and schedule and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively and develop positive working relationships with international students.
  • Working knowledge of an Asian language, or Spanish, would be an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite word processing software, with experience creating and updating spreadsheets and database management.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to request and convey information in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Be tactful and diplomatic.
  • Experience working with youth in a mentoring or supervisory role. 
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be collaborative and team-oriented.
  • Basic First Aid training would be an asset.
  • Excellent intercultural communication skills.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment would be an asset

The successful candidate must pass and maintain a clear criminal record check for the purposes of working with children.
