Middle School Physical Education Teacher and Athletics Coordinator

Permanent, full-time, starting September, 2019.

We are seeking a Middle School Physical Education teacher and Athletics Coordinator, commencing September 2019, to complement a strong Physical and Health Education program that includes coaching opportunities outside of the timetable. Physical fitness is an integral part of the overall SMUS program and so our Physical and Health Education program plays a crucial role in establishing a positive outlook to personal health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, teach, assess and report on Physical Education classes across all Middle School grades; 
  • Leading and coordinating the athletic program in the Middle School;
  • Working with athletes in the weight room and instructing students on strength training and other areas of fitness development;
  • Collaborating with the physical education team on physical and health education and fitness-related initiatives;
  • Communicating with parents on a regular basis about the Athletics program and opportunities;
  • Involvement in the curricular and extra-curricular endeavours in a multi-grade setting;
  • Involvement in the Teacher Advisory Group (TAG) program of the school as an element of pastoral care of Middle School students;
  • Communicating student learning to parents, attending staff meetings, participating on staff committees and participating in all duties associated with teaching;


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Physical and Health Education;
  • Experience as a Physical and Health Education teacher, particularly at the Middle School level, including a clear understanding of working with a diverse student body;
  • Experience coordinating Athletics programming in an educational setting and working with coaches to support a robust Athletics program;
  • Experience and familiarity with the redesigned BC Ministry of Education Physical and Health Education curriculum from Grades 6 to 8;
  • Experience coaching a variety of athletic teams;
  • Familiarity and success with current best practices in fitness for lifelong health;
  • Understanding and experience with differentiated instruction and assessment in a physical and health education environment;
  • Proficiency in using modern, progressive physical and health education assessment methods.
  • Criminal Record Check: The successful candidate must pass and maintain a clear criminal record check for the purposes of working with children.
