Senior School University Counsellor

Permanent, 0.8 FTE, starting September, 2019.

We are seeking a University Counsellor to work with students and their parents through the academic planning and university application processes in Canada, the United States, and abroad.

Key Responsibilities

This role includes academic advising, career education teaching, and university guidance, as well as the education of both parents and students in choices and processes. The candidate must have a good knowledge of independent school academic programs and of the array of post-secondary options that are appealing to students. It would be advantageous to have prior experience teaching career education.

In addition to advising students about post-secondary pathways and options, the successful applicant will also be responsible for guiding a group of Grade 9 to 12 students through academic planning leading to their post-secondary transition; this is done through individual meetings, classroom teaching, workshops, and large group presentations. The successful candidate will be part of a university counselling team that works to build and maintain their network with and knowledge of post-secondary options worldwide.

Qualifications

  • Teacher certification in the province of British Columbia, or eligibility to obtain it;
  • Understanding of BC Ministry of Education graduation requirements and career education courses;
  • Knowledge of university programs and application processes in Canada, the United States, and abroad;
  • Experience coordinating student support and advocating on behalf of students;
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and collaboration within a dynamic educational team;
  • Strong, professional verbal and written communication skills;
  • Willingness to travel, both for counsellor visits and to accompany student groups on university tours;
  • Knowledge of scholarships and scholarship application processes would be an asset.
  • Criminal Record Check: The successful candidate must pass and maintain a clear criminal record check for the purposes of working with children.
