Welcome to St. Michaels University School
Thank you for visiting the St. Michaels University School website. You can find out more about our school (located in Victoria, BC, Canada) using the tabs below.
SMUS is a world-class, co-ed day and boarding school, where students from 20 countries enjoy an outstanding academic program as well as a wealth of opportunities in the arts, athletics and leadership.
The school is so much more than I ever imagined. The teachers know you and are flexible, everyone in boarding really cares about one another and the staff are really invested in the school.

SMUS in Comparison
St. Michaels University School is one of the top schools in Canada for academic results. Across all subjects SMUS greatly outperforms both public and other independent schools in the provincial exams administered by the BC Ministry of Education.
2015 provincial exam results at SMUS were between 7% and 13% higher than the average. They were also between 7% and 25% higher than the average for independent schools.
Our students' success is largely due to the high quality of teaching and extensive student support. Though our academic standards for entrance are high, it is the challenging coursework and innovative classroom approaches that allow each and every student to reach their full potential – no matter their background or specific challenges.
SMUS has the largest and longest-running AP program in Canada and is one of the top-scoring programs nationally. The College Board named SMUS the top school in Canada for AP Equity and Excellence, which measures performance on AP exams based on the proportion of students taking part.
- 637 AP exams were written by 255 SMUS students
- 32 AP Canadian National Scholars (students who earn an average of 4 or higher on 5+ AP exams) were from SMUS.
SMUS is also one of only 10 schools in Canada selected to be part of the AP Capstone Pilot Program, designed to bring university-level academic skills to the classroom.
What are AP courses?
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are directly comparable to first-year university courses and a majority of American and Canadian universities grant second-year standing to students who excel on their AP exams.
SMUS has four dedicated university counsellors, ensuring that students are prepared to apply to, and study, in universities across the world.
Recent SMUS graduates are studying at Ivy League schools, Oxford, Cambridge, UCLA, Edinburgh, Toronto & UBC as well as dedicated arts and music schools.
- In 2015, 145 graduates received 631 university acceptances.
- The graduating class of 2015 was offered $2,386,070 in scholarships.
