Student Profile: Intermediate to Advanced, ages 12-18
This exciting new program will give students a chance to take their skills to the next level, with enrichment from gifted teachers and performers. Students will enjoy a challenging and fun atmosphere where performance and collaboration are valued, while also focusing on technique and ensemble experiences.

The String Orchestra is for students who want to experience playing in a full string ensemble. The workshop provides an engaging atmosphere for students of all levels and is a fantastic place for students to develop their musical and technical skills.
Included with the String Orchestra in Week 1 are daily masterclasses on your own instrument, where students have a chance to work with professionals on their own string instrument in a positive and fun environment. Open to violin, viola, cello, and bass students.
Chamber Ensembles and Jazz Ensembles

Groups of 4-8 players will work in small ensembles under the direction of a single teacher. All levels are welcome and groups will be organized so that students work with others at a similar level.
The Chamber Ensembles will focus on learning to play in small groups, with an emphasis on different string techniques, musicianship and experiencing a variety of different music genres. Instrumentation will largely be string quartets and quintets, with a mix of violins, violas, cellos and bass. Jazz ensembles will focus on music in the jazz idiom to be played in quartets or quintets.
SummerStrings Faculty Director
Nathan Jacklin BMus, MA candidate
Nathan Jacklin is a versatile musician, working as a cellist, conductor, arranger and teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Victoria and is currently working on a Master of Arts in Social, Cultural and Foundational Studies. Nathan is the music director of the Juan de Fuca Community String Orchestra and often works with the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. He is a founding member of the Victoria Cello Quartet and performs regularly as a cellist, including with the Victoria Symphony. Nathan is a strong believer in music both as an important part of everyday life and as an important way in which students can grow and develop life skills. He is currently the Director of Strings and Orchestra at Oak Bay High School.
