At the Junior and Middle schools, students learn French through a revolutionary approach to second-language instruction. The Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM) uses story, theatre, drama and music to put language in context. Specifically designed stories fuel a range of activities that push students to higher levels of oral and written fluency.

Students master a common vocabulary using techniques such as hand gestures and language immersion to aid retention. They learn to ask for and give information as well as speak about themselves and their interests.

Students examine authentic Francophone documents and explore Francophone cultures. Reading, writing, speaking and listening exercises flow together and overlap. A French-only environment leads to success: students quickly adapt to its challenges.

Mandarin (Chinese) Option

In Grade 6, students take Mandarin and may elect to continue with Mandarin in Grades 7 and 8. Students who do not continue with Mandarin in Grades 7 and 8 can choose to take either Communication Skills or Computer Science as a languge course. 

Mandarin (Chinese) Program

Learning to communicate in Mandarin Chinese is an appropriate and accessible goal for students in Canada as we continue to develop social and economic ties with the Asia-Pacific region. The study of Mandarin Chinese gives students broader choices when they make career and life plans.

Starting as beginners in Grade 6, students learn to use simplified characters and Hanyu Pinyin (phonetic system), which is recognized globally as the official and international writing system used by the majority of Chinese speakers in the world.

In Grades 7 and 8, students who elect to take Mandarin will continue to study Chinese phonetics – romanization of Chinese characters or Pinyin and the written language, and communicate in Mandarin. Classes will incorporate character and vocabulary building, sentence construction, written comprehension, phonetic exercises, language points, and cultural insights. On completion of this course, students will be able to express themselves at a higher level of proficiency and in broader functional areas.
