Senior School Departments

At the Senior School level, the breadth of course offerings is considerable. For information on the different departments and the courses, make a selection from the list below. For a complete guide to course requirements and detailed descriptions, see the Course Selection Guide, also below.

Language can be the key to uncovering the world around us. To become global citizens, our students need to be able to understand and engage with people from around the world. Speaking multiple languages allows students to transcend boundaries.

Our Modern Languages courses aim to:

  • inspire a love of language;
  • teach language in a cultural context; and
  • build speech, comprehension and writing skills;

Students enter language studies with different abilities and strengths, depending on their linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Language teachers make every effort to challenge students at each level; they commend individual strengths and help develop weaker areas. To encourage students to practice their language skills, classes are conducted in the language being taught.

Languages

  • French
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish

Technology

The SMUS Language Lab is a computer classroom outfitted with headphones where students can focus on their own comprehension and speaking skills. Students can record and play their own speech, listen to examples and complete interactive activities that test their understanding.

Extra Opportunities

Japan Trip

Students interested in Japanese language or culture can test their speaking skills and explore this island country. As they study both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, students will visit historical sites and popular attractions as well as interact with Japanese peers.
