Athletic Therapy

Injuries are an unfortunate reality of sport, especially competitive sports. You'll be glad to know that SMUS is just one of a handful of schools in Canada to have a certified athletic therapist on staff.

The Head Athletic Therapist provides both clinical and on-field care. They also advise on, and test for, concussive injuries (including return to learn/play).

If you should be injured while playing sport, you can make an appointment to see the athletic therapist to help you get back to your best as quickly as possible.

Clinical Services

The Head Athletic Therapist provides care from the dedicated athletic therapy office in the fitness centre. Find out more about SMUS's athletic therapist.

On-field Services

SMUS provides free on-field medical coverage for Senior School athletics, which includes emergency life support and recognition and management of acute trauma.

Home field Senior School rugby game coverage is provided by the SMUS's Head Athletic Therapist and Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy degree placement students from Camosun College. All practice and away game coverage are provided by the Camosun students when available, under the direction of the Head Athletic Therapist.

Concussive Injuries

SMUS is partnered with the University of Victoria Concussion Lab and all athletes participating in a contact sport are provided with a baseline concussion test. The SMUS team uses a variety of assessments to assist in the diagnosis and return to learn/play protocols. You can read more about assessment tools, the concussion team and SMUS's concussion policies.
