Virtual New Boarder Orientation

Our new boarder orientation might look different this year, but it does not mean that it isn’t going to be fun! We’re planning to welcome you to Victoria and our stunning SMUS campus while also keeping you safe. Our new boarder orientation will coincide with the quarantine program for international travellers needing to self-isolate.

Quarantine Program - for students arriving from outside Canada

Current regulations require all international travelers entering Canada to self-quarantine. At SMUS, we've made arrangements to assist you with this.

Recognizing that this is an additional burden, SMUS is pleased to inform you that it is organizing a quarantine program and will be covering a portion of the hotel accommodation. Please keep your hotel receipts. We have created an Arrival and Quarantine Plans web form that we ask you to complete. If you have any questions, please contact Elise Wren at [email protected]. Elise is your onboarding and arrival concierge and is pleased to assist you.

The first full day of classes is September 10, with boarders moving into residence starting September 8 (and not before). We ask families to book tickets that has them quarantining for 14 days before the start of school. The SMUS Quarantine program starts August 25 and ends September 7. For families who are sending their child alone, we are also pleased to inform you that we will have staff supervision available with staff staying at the Hilton Double Tree hotel. Please see the Accommodation Information page.

As soon as possible

Plan your academic year. The Admissions office will send you an email with course recommendations based on your grade. We will also put you in touch with one of our SMUS Academic Advisors to answer any questions that you may have. Log on to the Parent Portal to select your courses for the upcoming year. View the Course Handbook.

As soon as possible

Complete the Boarding Questionnaire. Tell us about yourself and your vision for boarding life. Please complete and save this information in the Parent Portal.

As soon as possible

Complete the Health Form. In the Parent Portal, complete and submit the Health Form.

As soon as possible

Apply for your study permit. If you do not have a Canadian passport, then you need to apply for a study permit. Once you have completed the enrolment process, the Admissions office will send you an email with full instructions on how to apply for a study permit. This will include a formal letter of acceptance for study permit purposes, receipt of tuition payment, and custodian forms to be notarized in your country. Please read this email carefully and begin the application process right away. Please note that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is still actively processing and approving study permits. Currently, only people who were approved for a study permit prior to March 18 can fly to Canada, and we are awaiting further announcements as to restrictions for September studies.

As soon as possible

School supplies can be purchased during Boarding Orientation including the TI83 or TI84 graphing calculator. Here is a basic list for students in Grades 9-12. Teachers will inform students what additional supplies are required in the first day of class.

As soon as possible

Check out the packing list. Plan ahead for any linens or personal items you may need to purchase in advance of your arrival at SMUS by reading last year's Family Handbook.

As soon as possible

Research mobile phone plans. Depending on what country you live in, it may be more cost effective to add an international plan to your existing phone plan in your home country. Mobile phone plans in Canada can be expensive, especially for international students.

As soon as possible

Look into banking. Contact your home country bank to see if they provide services in Canada. Depending on where you are coming from, you may be able to use your existing account, or you may need to open a new student account in Canada (Royal Bank of Canada is a good choice for students, but there are others, such as Scotiabank, Bank of Montreal, TD Bank, or CIBC).

Wait for Instructions

Book your flights. Before picking an arrival date, wait for instructions from the Admissions office. It is best to fly to Victoria with connecting flights, rather than using the ferry to Victoria from Vancouver (experienced travelers only). Also, please make sure that any travel bookings that you are making are flexible and changeable without penalty (due to the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic).

Tues, Sept. 8, 1-4 pm

New boarders can move in to their rooms starting at 1:00 pm.

Thur, Sept. 10, 8:10 am

First full day of classes for Senior School students begins at 8:10 am.
