Dorothy Hawes
Teacher, Senior School English
September, 1991
BA, PDPP (University of Victoria); MA (Queen’s University); AVCN (Victoria Conservatory of Music)

The best gift you can impart to your students is a passion for literature; a love of reading will engage them in learning in every facet of their lives.

After completing a double major in English and German at UVic, Dorothy spent a summer working in Germany. She then returned to complete her Masters work at Queen’s University. Upon arriving back in Victoria, Dorothy got married and attended the Victoria Conservatory of Music where she completed the piano pedagogy program and received her AVCM.

“After the conservatory, I spent a couple of years teaching private piano lessons,” she says. “I then landed at UVic again to complete the BC Teacher’s Certification program, and worked as a TOC in the Saanich school district for a year.”

Dorothy applied to SMUS and began part-time in 1991. She taught German during her first year and then moved over to the English Department where she has been ever since.

“I have always appreciated the diverse student body and the feeling of community that SMUS creates,” she says. “I also enjoy working in such a beautiful environment. The dedication of the grounds crew to keep our school looking pristine creates such positive energy.”

Beyond teaching English, Dorothy coordinates the Recitation evenings, is the faculty advisor on the Service Council, the Grad Fashion Show and TGIF (Teens Growing in Faith). She has been the recipient of Pro-D awards twice.

In her spare time Dorothy enjoys music, often playing the piano at church. She loves to entertain and create desserts or relax with a great book. As a writer, she enjoys writing stories for children and young adults.
