Students learn when they are personally engaged with the material.

Jenn’s journey to SMUS is a winding road. While completing her Master’s degree, she worked as a houseparent in Symons House and taught in the public school system. In 2005, Jenn took a position as the principal of Deep Creek Middle School on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. It was a time of growth and she returned with a deeper understanding of the art of teaching.

“I learned so much about myself as a school administrator, the culture of The Bahamas, developing and fostering a positive learning environment, and teaching students to be leaders in their own communities,” she says. “I loved my experience in The Bahamas and I am so proud of myself for taking that opportunity to grow professionally.”

Jenn returned to Canada in 2008 for a position in the Admissions department at Brentwood College while her husband, Chris Bateman ’94, taught at SMUS. The family moved back to SMUS and their daughter, Grace, was born. Now with two kids, Jenn is a University Counsellor in the Senior School and a Senior Houseparent in Bolton House with Chris, who is Head of Visual Arts in the Senior School.

“I love teaching because I can see growth in the students every week,” she says. “SMUS kids take pride in their work and are eager to learn and challenge themselves.”

There are 52 boys from grades 8-12 in the boarding house and Jennifer is right in the middle of the action organizing activities, doing office duty and helping to guide the ship.

“It has been a very exciting, busy and rewarding experience so far!” she says.

In her spare time, you will likely find Jennifer planning the next family trip, stretching out on a Pilates mat or colouring with Grace and Cleo.
