I am dedicated to creating a positive, healthy and physically active learning environment.

Female mentors and coaches have been pivotal in Melanie’s development as an athlete and she is focused on imparting the benefits of athletic involvement for adolescent girls.

“I believe in an active, healthy lifestyle,” says Melanie. “I enjoy the relationships created by involvement in sport and I emphasize developing the whole student beyond the classroom.”

Originally from Penticton, BC, Melanie was a member of the Team BC Volleyball program. In her playing career at the University of Alberta, she won both CIS National Silver and Bronze medals with the Pandas Volleyball Team. After graduation Melanie pursued a professional volleyball career in Le Touquet, France, with TAC Volley FFVB, Nationale Div 1. She followed that up as an assistant coach with the UofA Pandas and head coach with the Alberta Volleyball program. Melanie has also spent time living, teaching and coaching in Melbourne and Brisbane Australia.  Just prior to joining SMUS, Melanie was teaching Phys Ed and coaching volleyball at Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton, AB.

Since joining SMUS in 2011, Melanie has taken the helm as head coach of the Senior Girls’ and Grade 8 volleyball teams and joined boarding as a Junior Houseparent (I think this is changed to Resident Assistant) in Winslow House.

“I aim to equip students with lifelong, healthy habits,” she says. “This helps develop personal character and overall life skills.”

Outside of SMUS you will find her spending time with her family, practicing yoga, out on one of Victoria’s many golf courses, or on the road looking for adventure.
