Enjoy what you do, examine constantly what you do, and be prepared to learn from your students.

Xavier’s career at SMUS began as a part-time teacher and house parent in the early 1980s. He also attended the school from grades 9-12. Today, Xavier has almost 30 years of experience in education in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Quebec in both independent and public schools.

“Middle School students need their own school structure that is suited to their developmental needs,” says Xavier. “It’s very important to stay current with educational research and practices. This will translate into better teaching and learning for students.”

In addition to his work as Director of the Middle School, Xavier teaches Health and Career Education and takes part in the extracurricular program, including soccer, swimming, the school musical production, and chess.

“I do my best to stay connected to the students,” he says. “Part of that connection comes from teaching a small percentage of the time. Students need to know that you take an interest in them and are passionate about what you teach.”

In his spare time, he enjoys biking, travelling and growing vegetables in his greenhouse. He’s also an avid reader who favours novels by Elizabeth George and Ian Rankin. For Xavier, life outside of school keeps him fresh and prepared to help kids face everyday challenges.
