An Open Day of Discovery at SMUS

You are invited to the reinvention of the school open house. Visit the SMUS Junior, Middle & Senior Schools on Friday, February 24. You'll have the opportunity to meet students, talk to staff, take a tour with a student ambassador and – at the Middle and Senior Schools – spend time hands-on learning with our exceptional teachers.

You don't have to register for Spring Spark but it is helpful for us if you do.

More Information

  • Spring Spark is a drop-in event, meaning you can come and go as you please throughout the day. Attend one session or several, it's up to you!
  • You are absolutely welcome to bring your children to Spring Spark.
  • On the Richmond Road campus (Middle & Senior Schools) parking will be available in front of the main school house on campus. At the Junior School, please park only on Victoria Avenue.

All sessions take place either at the Senior or Middle School on the Richmond Road campus. We'll point you in the right direction when you arrive.

10:00am-10:30am Hands on with Lego® Robotics Crothall Centre Innovation Lab Room 306

Calling Lego lovers of all ages! Get hands-on experience with the Lego Robotics program open to our Junior and Middle School students. Build a robot attachment with Lego bricks then learn how to program robots to use the attachments.

Geology Rocks Crothall Centre Boardroom

Learn all about the rocks and minerals that make up the Earth with this hands-on session that teaches the fundamental skills of rock identification and classification.

11:00am-11:30am Essential Skills for Success: Notetaking Crothall Room 233

SMUS’s Learning Resource department is very highly-regarded in our community. Find out why in this session, when Laura Miller, Head of Learning Resource, will lead you through an activity to give you some tips about improving your notetaking.

We’ve all seen the entertaining effects of dry ice to produce a dramatic fog, but how does it work? Middle School Science teacher Mr. Jim Williams will teach you the process of sublimation using dry ice to demonstrate.

Healthy body, healthy mind is very much a part of the SMUS educational approach. Pump up your own fitness routine by learning some secrets from Health and Wellness Director Richard Primrose that will get you working more of your muscles.

1:00pm-1:30pm What Can Sudoku Teach Me About Math? School House Room 303

Math is based on reasoning and logic plus numeracy, making number patterns an ideal stepping stone to more complicated mathematical concepts. Senior School Math department head Mrs. Bernadette Abrioux will show you how number pattern games like Sodoku can take the stress out of learning Math.
