History and Traditions

St. Michaels University School was formed in 1971, when University School (founded in 1906) and St. Michael's School (founded in 1910) amalgamated.

Both began as boys schools modelled after English public schools. University School was primarily boarding with a strong military heritage.  St. Michael's School was very much the life passion of K.C. Symons, who founded the school and was its head until 1948.

Through a series of challenges, both schools kept their traditions alive until they combined in 1971. This amalgamation celebrated in our 50 year Jubilee was a momentous event and paved the way for astonishing growth. Of most importance was the school becoming co-educational in 1978 when girls were admitted for the first time.

These foundations have led to a school of strong repute, known throughout the world as one of Canada's most successful and prestigious independent schools.
