Grade 11 student Abi Portriss is preparing to represent Team Canada at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships, Oct, 22-26, in Prague, Czechia, one of the largest international dance competitions in the world. Dancers from 32 countries will compete for top honours at the event.
Abi has been dancing since the age of two and began tap dancing at five. She trains at a local studio and is excited to travel on the world stage to perform.
“It’s so exciting and thrilling to be able to do what I love at such a big magnitude,” Abi said. “Dance has always been my passion, so to compete in something I love feels incredible.”
Abi credits her school community with helping her build confidence and performance skills that extend beyond the stage. Through assemblies, school musicals, and a variety of leadership opportunities, SMUS has played an important role in her growth as both a performer and a person.
“The leadership opportunities I’ve had at SMUS have made me more confident and self-assured,” she says. “They’ve helped me become not only a better person, but also a better dancer and performer.”
As she prepares to spend two weeks in Prague, Abi says the encouragement from teachers, classmates, and family has meant the world.
“Everyone’s been so supportive and excited for me,” she said. “I couldn’t do this without my mom, dad, my teachers, SMUS, or the people who’ve helped me along the way. I’m just really thankful for it all.”
