With spring in the air (and hopefully in our steps), we are gearing up for our largest annual community celebration, Alumni Weekend 2024, in just a few short weeks. This year’s event falls on the weekend of May 3-5 and we are anticipating fabulous weather and a great turnout of alumni, students, parents, staff and faculty. All members of our SMUS community are welcome!
You may have already heard the word, and hopefully saved the date, but perhaps you are wondering what this event is all about and why you should join in on the fun.
Of course, as its name suggests, this weekend is a chance for alumni to come back to campus, reconnect with former friends and classmates, share stories and memories with others, and call teachers by their first names. All this will happen in spades. But perhaps just as important to our alumni community is the opportunity to see how their old school has changed (or stayed the same) and how our current students and families are making the most out of their SMUS experience and carving their own path throughout their time at the school.
This event allows us to showcase so many of the amazing arts, athletics, and academic programs that make SMUS such a wonderful place. The main community day is Saturday, May 4 where most activities throughout the day are student-centred and offer something for all ages and stages to enjoy. Here’s a taste of what you can enjoy:
- An all-welcome pancake breakfast, followed by bouncy castles, arts and crafts, robotics and rowing activations
- A special chapel service
- A student-led marketplace featuring all sorts of goods created and managed by our Grade 10 Business students
- The Grad Bear toss for our graduating students who will soon become our newest members of the alumni family
- Rugby, soccer, field hockey, basketball, and cricket matches
- …and so much more.
A welcome addition to this year’s agenda, the Theatre Company 11/12 class will be putting on a production of Murder on the Orient Express which will be open to all those wishing to attend (more details to come).
Other weekend highlights include an Alumni/student rugby banquet where we celebrate our school’s rich rugby history, class reunions, alumni presentations in class sessions, campus tours, and food… lots and lots of food!
At the heart of Alumni Weekend is the idea that the strongest bonds are forged in moments of fun, laughter, and shared experiences. Whether you're bonding with fellow parents over a cup of coffee, swapping stories with alumni who walked the halls before you, or laughing with classmates or teammates as you tackle a new challenge together, every interaction at Alumni Weekend is an opportunity to build connections that will last a lifetime. These are the moments that you'll cherish for years to come—the memories that will bring a smile to your face whenever you think back on this special time.
We hope you will all join us this year to celebrate the special SMUS community we are all a part of. There will be something here for everyone to enjoy. So, gather your family and friends and join us at our Richmond Road campus for an occasion filled with school spirit and pride. We can’t wait to welcome you.
