SMUS Alumni Arlen So '25 at The Institute Premier

Just weeks after taking the graduation stage as a member of the Class of 2025, Arlen So is stepping into the spotlight once again — this time on screen.

On July 13, Arlen makes his television debut in The Institute, a new limited series based on the novel by Stephen King. The eight-episode MGM+ thriller will be available to stream on Amazon's Prime Video.

Arlen has been no stranger to the SMUS stage with prominent roles in school musicals including The Prom in 2025 and Something Rotten! in 2024. Arlen was fully immersed in the SMUS experience. In addition to school musicals, Arlen was a school prefect as co-head of the Pride club, a member of the school's Service and Leadership club and was a core member of the school's band, orchestra and choir.

"During my time here, SMUS has helped me develop my confidence, especially in the performing arts," said Arlen in reflecting on his time at the school from Grade 4 to 12. "I  struggled a lot with insecurity coming into high school, and SMUS has provided an environment where I can learn and grow with courage. The individuals I have met through this school,  faculty and friends, have given me the opportunity to live incredible experiences. Without the people and opportunities SMUS has provided for me, I wouldn't be where I am today, and I am incredibly grateful."

News of Arlen's television casting in The Institute was first shared in the fall, a feather in the cap for his final year at SMUS. Now, with the premiere just days away, this milestone marks an exciting next chapter in his journey as a young actor.

Set in a mysterious facility where children with extraordinary abilities are held against their will, The Institute is a gripping psychological thriller. Arlen plays one of the young captives navigating the harsh, secretive world inside the walls. Arlen showcases his versatility by playing a dramatic role while also delivering moments of unexpected humour, injecting light into an otherwise tense and eerie storyline.

"I'd like to thank Mr. and Mrs. McLeod for supporting my endeavours in the performing arts," credited Arlen of SMUS Head of Theatre Morgan McLeod and Arlen's agent Kelli McLeod of PLAY Management Inc. "I would never have had the confidence nor opportunity to live my dream of being in a TV show."

Arlen is set to head to the University of Toronto in the Fall of 2026 to pursue studies in ethics, society and law.
