When the school year came to a close in June, many of our student athletes did not take the summer off. Along with many of our alumni, some students continued their training through the summer, while others spent part of their break competing at the provincial and national levels in a variety of sports.

Basketball

A number of Middle and Senior School athletes took part in the BBall Nationals (Club Basketball Championships) in Langley. Grade 7 students Charlie A. and Avery G., along with Grade 8 students Madeleine A., Chioma D., Katie M., Alex M. and Olivia V. competed on the U13 team, while Grade 9 students Makena Anderson, Brianne McLeish, Sophie Olcen, Lauren Rust and Jojo Tupas-Singh were on the U15 Elite team.

Field Hockey

Anna Mollenhauer '17 travelled with Team Canada to Lima, Peru to compete at the Pan American Games. The Women's National team finished the tournament with a silver medal after upsetting defending champions Team USA in their semi-final match. 

Golf

Jack Rothwell '19 won the BC Amateur Golf Championship in July, earning a spot on Team BC at the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship.

Grade 9 student Daniel Bennett represented BC at the Eddie Hogan Cup tournament in Portland, Oregon. Later in the summer Bennett finished second at the BC Juvenile Boys Golf Championship.

Hockey

Grade 12 student Matias Totz played for Team BC at the ball hockey Junior National Championships and earned a bronze medal in the U17 competition.

Rowing

SMUS Crew athlete Liam Hodgins (Grade 12) and alumnus Matthew Cormie '19 joined Team Canada at the CanAmMex Regatta in Sarasota, Florida. Both rowers earned a silver and bronze medal in their competitions.

Rugby

Right after the 2018-19 school year let out, a number of SMUS athletes represented Vancouver Island at the Provincial Regional Championships, including Grade 9 students Matthew Bennett, Skye Farish and Jhye Graffi, Grade 11 students Allistair Catto and Luka Djurickovic, Grade 12 students Kenzi Farish, Chloe Hill-Huse and Sophia Tafel, and alumni Kiri Ngawati '19 and Tate Robinson '19.

Later in the summer, Hill-Huse, Tafel and Ngawati, along with Grade 12 student Jessica Nonay and Grade 11 student Toby Wu, were named to Team BC for the U18 Western Championships. Morgan Warner '19 competed for Team Alberta at the same competition.

Quinn Ngawati '17 joined Team Canada for the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Brazil in July.

Tafel and the two Ngawatis were also named to the rosters of Rugby Canada's development academies for the 2019-20 year.

Grade 9 students Bennett, Graffi and Carter Haddow also played on the BC Rugby U14 rep team in a match-up against a team from Washington state in July.

Catto and Djurickovic earned a silver medal for Team BC at the U16 Western Canadian Championships in August.

Luke McCloskey '10 competed at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in Rugby Sevens, earning a silver medal for Team Canada.

Sailing

Grade 12 student Luke Vincent travelled to Kingston, Ont., with the Royal Victoria Yacht Club to compete in the Sail Canada Youth Championships and the ILCA Laser Radial Youth World Championships, the latter of which drew top young athletes from all over the world.

Squash

Grade 10 student Alex Brown represented Team Canada in the Battle of the Borders squash competition, which pits the top junior players from Canada against the top players from the United States against Team USA. Brown played on the Girls U17 team.

Track and Field

Grade 12 student Angelina Shandro travelled to Querétaro, Mexico as a member of Team Canada to compete at the NACAC U18/U23 Championships against teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Shandro was a member of Canada's U18 mixed 4x100 relay team that won a bronze medal.
