Senior Boys Rugby
The SMUS Senior Boys Rugby team battled hard before ultimately falling 24-14 to visiting Oak Bay in the annual Boot Game that was a centrepiece of Alumni festivities on Saturday afternoon.
Braxton Lechner and Ewan Webber-Smith scored tries for the Blue Jags in front of a sizable home crowd. Jack Driscoll added a pair of conversions in the loss.
The Senior Boys are scheduled to visit Shawnigan Lake on Thursday for a 4:45 pm kickoff.
Senior Girls Rugby 7s
Visiting Oak Bay also won the annual Robinson Cup match held as part of Alumni celebrations, beating the SMUS Senior Girls Rugby 7s team 25-5. Carlotta D’Amico scored the Blue Jags’ try.
The SMUS Senior Girls wrap up their Lower Island regular season with a pair of games on Monday (May 5) at Reynolds, against both the host team and Stelly’s. Action begins at 3:45 pm.
Junior Boys Rugby

Senior Girls Soccer
Joss Olcen scored a hat trick to power the SMUS Senior Girls Soccer team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Esquimalt in a Ryan Cup playoff quarter-final on Thursday.

SMUS will host Oak Bay in a Ryan Cup semifinal this Tuesday (May 6), beginning at 3:45 pm. The winner of that game will meet the survivor of a Spectrum-Royal Bay semifinal in Thursday’s 5:15 pm Cup final at Starlight Stadium.
Tennis
The SMUS Girls Tennis team defeated Stelly’s and Glenlyon Norfolk School this past week and is now off to the Island Championships on Monday (May 5) at Brentwood College.
The Girls have lost only one regulation match this year, which came in the ISAA championship final against Crofton House last month at UBC.
“We have high hopes for them as they compete for the Island title on Monday,” said SMUS Coach Dayton Preissl.
The SMUS Boys also defeated GNS and Stelly’s last week. However, because the team had to forfeit two matches this season due to an insufficient number of players, it did not qualify for the Island tournament.
Badminton
The SMUS Senior Badminton teams swept their final Lower Island league matches against visiting Oak last Thursday. The SMUS Boys prevailed 6-1 while the Girls won 5-2. The results established both teams as South No. 2 seeds heading into the Island Championships this Friday at Cowichan.
Meanwhile, the SMUS Junior teams fared extremely well in their respective Lower Island tournaments this past Saturday at Belmont. Lisa Pai and Ellie Whitehouse captured first place in the Grade 9 Girls doubles category and Kate Boonsermmit and Jacqueline Liu won the Grade 10 Girls doubles title. Sam Wei finished second in Grade 10 Boys singles while teammate Humphrey Yang was knocked out early but persisted to capture first in the consolation round.
Oscar He and Justin Zhao finished first and second, respectively, in Grade 9 Boys singles while Leighton Foster and Kevin Jiang captured first place in Grade 9 Boys doubles. The SMUS Grade 9s took first place overall for their combined team effort.
Golf
After an excellent start to its season in the Victoria City Police Tournament at Olympic View in April, the SMUS Golf team is competing with 15 other teams at the Independent Schools Athletic Association Championship tournament on Monday (May 5) at McCleery Golf Course in Vancouver.
