The fall athletics season is hitting its stride, with Blue Jags teams competing across the Island and beyond. From season openers to major tournaments, here’s what’s happened in SMUS athletics from Sept. 14-21, 2026.
Field Hockey
After a slight delay to the start of its season, the SMUS Competitive Field Hockey team will see plenty of action this week.
The Blue Jags opened their Lower Island league schedule with a well-earned 0-0 road draw on Monday against Glenlyon Norfolk School. Lauren Arndt stepped in to play in goal due to a teammate’s illness and earned the shutout for SMUS, which was missing its Grade 11 players due to school out-trips. Arndt made several key saves and weathered a flurry of penalty corners late in the game to give the Blue Jags a good start to the season.
SMUS will also play a league match this Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the University of Victoria against Claremont at 3:30 p.m.
The Competitive team was scheduled to participate in last weekend’s Friendship Cup tournament in Duncan, but a number of scheduling conflicts resulted in SMUS having to withdraw from that event. However, the Blue Jags will travel to Duncan this coming weekend for the annual John Ferreira Memorial tournament.
SMUS has been placed in Pool B of Tier 1 for the tournament. In pool action on Friday at Shawnigan Lake School, the Blue Jags will meet host Shawnigan at 9:00 a.m. and Queen Margaret’s at 11:30 a.m. Semifinals go at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the final scheduled for 3:15 p.m., all at the Cowichan Sportsplex.
Meanwhile, the SMUS Development Field Hockey team also began its season on Monday with a 2-2 road draw against GNS-2. Lola Wuth scored both goals for the Blue Jags, assisted by Nina Trinder on the first and Sadie Arnold on the second.
The Development team will meet Oak Bay-2 at UVic in its second league game this Wednesday, beginning at 4:30 pm.
Senior Boys Soccer
The SMUS Senior Boys Soccer team will kick off its season by hosting the 10-team Independent Schools Athletic Association (ISAA) Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
The Blue Jags, defending ISAA champions, have been placed in Pool A for the tournament along with Collingwood, West Point Grey Academy, Shawnigan Lake School, and Glenlyon Norfolk. Pool B includes St. George’s, Brentwood College, Mulgrave, Southridge, and Aberdeen Hall.
SMUS will play GNS at 9:45 am on Friday in its first game of the tournament before meeting West Point Grey at 12:15 p.m. and Shawnigan at 4:30 p.m. The Blue Jags’ final preliminary game goes Saturday at 10:15 a.m. vs. Collingwood.
The two pool winners will meet in Saturday’s final at 3:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, the SMUS Junior Boys Soccer team will also begin play this week, taking on Stelly’s in a 3:30 p.m. matchup on Wednesday at Centennial Park.
Cross Country
Fifteen SMUS runners are expected to compete in the first Lower Island Cross Country meet of the season this Wednesday at Lambrick Park. Racing will begin at 3:45 p.m.
SMUS runners will take part in four Lower Island races this season, followed by the Island Championships Oct. 28 at Arbutus Meadows and the BC Championships Nov. 7 at Clearbrook Park in Abbotsford.
Volleyball
SMUS Volleyball teams will hit the hardwood at several locations this week as the season gets into full swing.
The Senior Girls will travel to GNS Tuesday for a three-team series with GNS and Brookes Westshore beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The Junior Girls will visit Royal Bay for a three-team series on Thursday, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, after beginning their season with a 12th-place finish in the annual Chargers Fall Classic earlier this month, the Senior Boys team will travel to Langley for the Trinity Western University tournament this weekend. SMUS has been placed in Pool R for the 20-team Senior Boys’ draw along with South Kamloops, Credo Christian, and Surrey Christian.
