In trying times, our community has demonstrated great strength. We are more than halfway to our goal of raising $100,000 this month for the Financial Aid Relief Fund. Thank you to everyone who has supported this call for support so far. We are grateful for your investment in our community.

We still need help to ensure no families are prevented from returning to SMUS for the 2020-21 school year due to the financial impacts of COVID-19. We are committed to supporting our families with short-term, partial tuition assistance to SMUS students whose families are critically affected by the economic climate related to the pandemic.

A donation of any amount can help us secure the generous matching donation from the Parents’ Auxiliary, doubling our efforts to an outstanding $200,000 for financial aid to support current students in the upcoming school year.

Why they gave

We shared this appeal with the global SMUS community, and are so grateful for the response so far. With more than $60,000 raised to date, the reasons for giving share a similar sentiment. In the words of four of our donors:

“Now more than ever, the importance of a strong, well-supported financial aid program is paramount, to continue to grow a diverse and robust student body to the benefit of all. We are honoured to be part of a school community that recognizes, first and foremost, the necessity of supporting all students, all families where necessary, so that we may move forward together through these challenging times, leaving no one behind.” – Mike Jawl ’76 and Kathy Jawl, past parents of three SMUS graduates

“I support financial aid at SMUS because every day I see firsthand the impact that one student can have on the people and world around them. Each student brings a truly unique voice and viewpoint, thanks to the diverse make-up of our community. And that's important now more than ever. I don’t want the economic impact of this pandemic to result in our students not being able to access this education. I’m proud to support a community that’s taking steps to assist those who need it, ensuring we remain whole.” – Anonymous staff member

“I have been fortunate enough to put my three children through SMUS from Kindergarten to Grade 12. I know the value of a SMUS education. I have always supported financial aid as I want to help students remove financial barriers. I think during this time of crisis it is essential to continue to help those less fortunate to be able to attend the school.” – John Pollen, alumni parent of three SMUS graduates

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study abroad, including attending St. Michaels University School. My dad had to earn $6 HK dollars for $1 Canadian dollar back then. As I was earning my college degree from USC and entering into my career world, someone gave me an opportunity, and from that opportunity on, I have made many achievements. I believe everyone deserves an opportunity, especially those who are unable to afford a SMUS education and are willing to work hard. That's why I want my contribution to serve the families who need our help. I care deeply about opportunity and fairness." – Willy Ma, ’73
