Enable learners to offer their best to the world.

While travelling through Europe, Leanne had an epiphany. She was so inspired by her travels and fascinated with culture and language that, when she arrived back in Canada, she switched her degree program and went on to become an English as a Second Language teacher.

“Travelling gave me a great empathy for language learners,” says Leanne. “I have experienced and understand the frustration of thinking at a higher level than my language skills would let me express.”

Growing up in Victoria, Leanne always wished she could attend SMUS. She first worked in boarding while at university and that experience sealed it for her. She vowed that, when she had children, they would be SMUS students and she has kept that promise to herself, enrolling her kids since kindergarten. Her dream job, Head of the ESL department, was posted in the spring of 2011, and she was appointed for the 2012/2013 school year.

“I am passionate about empowering my students with the language skills needed to let them express their true selves and share their talents and gifts with the world,” she says. “As a life-long learner, this makes my career energizing and fulfilling.”

Before coming to SMUS, Leanne taught ESL in Kindergarten to grade 8, as well as Students With Outstanding Capabilities (Gifted Program), French as a Second Language, and in the regular classroom.  She was also the Team Leader for the ESL Department in School District 63 (Saanich). Leanne has spoken to Education classes at the University of Victoria about technology and ESL and given Professional Development sessions about ESL, Technology, writing and Language Arts.

In her free time Leanne enjoys travelling, photography and reading.
