Students smile and laugh after winning the City volleyball championship

Volleyball

The Grade 7 Girls competitive Volleyball team captured the city championship this past week.

After going undefeated in league play, the Blue Jags beat Bayside in two straight sets in a semifinal. SMUS won two out of three sets against Royal Oak in the final to take the title.

Rugby

The Senior Boys Rugby team defeated Mount Douglas 26-5 in an exhibition game played last Thursday in front of a sizable home crowd at SMUS.

Although weather conditions for the match were perfect, there were plenty of mistakes from both sides in this preseason affair. Grade 11 Jack Driscoll scored a try and slotted two conversions for the Blue Jags while Jordan Martin, in his first Senior Rugby call-up, contributed a try and played well on both sides of the ball.

Other Grade 10 students who saw the field for the Blue Jags were Tristan Mo, Declan Longridge, Des Grant and Henry Williamson, all of whom rose to the occasion.

Next on the agenda for the Senior Boys is an away game at Claremont on Tuesday, the first league fixture of the season.

Basketball

Former SMUS basketball star Makena Anderson, who just completed her freshman season with the University of Victoria Vikes, was named to the national U Sports All-Rookie team last week.

Anderson was honoured at the U Sports women’s All-Canadian banquet in Edmonton on Wednesday. Previously, Anderson had been named both the Canada West conference rookie of the year and also to the Canada West All-Rookie team.

Anderson made 20 starts as a first-year player in the Vikes’ 24 games this season. She averaged nearly 24 minutes and 8.3 points per game for UVic.
