Richard Brambley, Director of Middle School

Our Middle School curriculum is a gateway to immersive learning experiences filled with endless possibilities. Here, we foster inquiry-based and project-based learning, encouraging students to delve deep, unleash their creativity, and embrace new skills. It is with great pleasure that we announce the unanimous approval of the Middle School Expansion Project, by our Board of Governors. This approval marks a significant stride toward creating an inspiring educational environment for our students.

Expansion Rationale

Since the establishment of our Middle School in 1992, we have witnessed remarkable growth in both student enrolment and faculty. This growth has been further enriched by the inclusion of personal counselling and learning resources, along with evolving pedagogical methodologies.

While this increase is positive news for SMUS, it has also prompted a demand for expanded facilities. Our students, who currently benefit from outstanding teaching, support, and guidance, deserve optimal teaching-and-learning areas and accessories that empower them to embark on their journeys as collaborative learners, critical thinkers, and flexible problem solvers—essential qualities for their future successes. The Middle School’s evolving educational landscape, therefore, calls for versatile and inspiring learning spaces, small breakout areas, updated learning commons, and communal spaces that foster socialization and meaningful discussions.

STEAM Emphasis

A central focus of the expansion project is our dedicated pursuit of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). We are excited about the advancements in our science laboratories, the relocation of our Art room to a more inspiring and inviting setting, the creation of flexible learning commons, enhanced counselling facilities, and a state-of-the-art learning resource centre. Additionally, we will provide dedicated space for our immensely popular robotics, design technology, engineering, and computer science programs—each of these future developments of which we are excited to embrace, and that will have profound relevance to our students' future educational prospects.

Project Timeline and Transparency: A Promising Start

As we begin reimagining SMUS Middle School, we recognize the importance of transparency and open communication. As such, we are delighted to inform you that construction is scheduled to commence in June 2024, with ground breaking immediately following our school’s closure for the summer break. The estimated timeline for completion is 18 months, with the new additions ready for a January 2026 reveal.

Building on our success with recent projects, like the Trottier-Morgan Junior School Annex, we are committed to a promising start with minimal disruptions to our school community. Our Richmond Road campus provides the space and flexibility necessary to ensure our Middle School students' experiences remain uninterrupted.

As a school, we are dedicated to preparing our students for life's challenges and helping them grow. Now, we will have the space and resources to nurture their creative thinking, inspire boundless possibilities, and equip them to solve the complex problems of tomorrow.
