At St. Michaels University School’s annual Lifers assembly, a photo of a five-year-old appears on the gymnasium screen beside the now graduating Grade 12 student standing before it. For parents, it feels like time travel, compressing years of growth into a single moment. It is a reminder that every SMUS journey begins with a first step: Kindergarten.

That first step begins in two intentionally built Kindergarten classes in the Oak Bay-based Junior School campus. Here, teachers know every student by name and by nature within weeks. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, the program nurtures capable, curious learners and invites them to explore, question and create from their very first day. For those who enter the Junior Kindergarten program, for ages 3-4, the foundations are laid even earlier.

In practice, learning is hands-on and joyful. Students explore nearby beaches on outdoor learning days, transforming their discoveries into classroom inquiry. In Story Workshop, pebbles become cities, fabric becomes rivers and five-year-olds become confident storytellers. Along the way they learn to share, collaborate and care for each other.

For many families, Kindergarten marks the beginning of something extraordinary. Friendships formed in those first weeks often endure, as do the connections parents make at drop-off, assemblies and community events. Choosing SMUS is about more than a classroom; it is the first step into a lifelong community.
