SMUS Junior School Terry Fox Run 2025

The fall sports season is off to a busy start at the Junior School, with students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 taking part in a variety of activities. Cross-country is already underway, giving students the option to join club practices for fun and fitness or take on a five-race series against other schools from across the region.

Soccer clubs for Grades 4 and 5 are also in full swing, with early-morning practices and jamborees scheduled throughout the fall—offering plenty of opportunities to build teamwork, sharpen coordination, and enjoy friendly competition.

The school’s unique weekend sports program continues to be a highlight, emphasizing the FUNdamentals of movement—running, throwing and jumping—with the emphasis on fun.

“Our weekend sports are optional, free, and open to all Junior School students,” says Athletic Coordinator and Physical Education teacher, Gary Barber. “It’s a chance for children to build their skills in a supportive environment, while keeping the focus on enjoyment and participation.”

In addition to sports that focus on skill-building and offer competitive opportunities, the Junior School also values events that bring the whole community together. The Terry Fox Run, taking place on September 19, is a cherished tradition at SMUS, raising money and awareness for cancer research and one that sees every student and many staff members take part — whether they are walking or running. Parents line the course to cheer them on, making it a true community celebration of effort and spirit.

The program continues to evolve with the seasons, shifting indoors in October for badminton, followed later by gymnastics, basketball, swimming and more. In the spring, students head back outdoors for track and field, where they build athletic skills and enjoy the challenge of running, jumping and throwing events.

With such a wide range of opportunities on offer—including the weekend sports program—the Junior School is helping its youngest learners build both skills and a love of physical activity that will carry them forward.
