Financial aid plays a key part in our community. Supporting Financial Aid helps ensure that all deserving students have the opportunity to benefit from a SMUS education, regardless of financial circumstances.

In this series, we will share personal stories from alumni who were able to attend SMUS, in part thanks to generous donors who supported Financial Aid. It is their hope, and ours, that their experiences and gratitude will inspire others to support this important campaign and make the difference for deserving students today.

Chiara Clemente ‘13

"Financial support allowed my parents to send both my sister and me to SMUS from Grades 8 to 12. The financial support in particular allowed my parents to feel confident that we could attend the school all the way up until graduation without the worry that we may have to change schools at any point. My parents wouldn't have been able to send us both to SMUS had it not been for the additional financial assistance.

My most memorable experiences involved out-trips of all kinds (kayaking, skiing, hiking) and taking part in the musical productions (My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls). These are experiences that I would not have otherwise had in my life and I can confidently say that they played a part in shaping who I am today, as they relate to my current hobbies and interests.

It is hard to pick just one favourite teacher, as so many of them were truly incredible. Mrs. Beth Johnston was among my favourites, as she has a passion and interest for chemistry that is contagious. She also always instilled the importance of hard work into her students, and rewarded it. I am still in touch with her today and she continues to be a support for me.

I am currently a pharmacist at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. The transition from high school to university is always a challenging one, and I would say that the skills I learned at SMUS in terms of time management and how to study effectively helped me to be successful throughout my university years. I made a lot of lasting relationships with my peers and teachers that have also helped me get to the place I am today, both personally and educationally. The friends that I made at SMUS are truly very special to me and I feel lucky to have them in my life."

Thank you, Chiara, for lending your voice in support of financial aid, and to our SMUS community for your generosity.
