Dear St. Michaels University School community,

I am writing to you at a time when our school is being tested like many others to meet the challenges of providing an outstanding educational experience for our students amid a global pandemic.

The months of careful planning over the summer to prepare for the opening of school and the effort and resilience now being shown by students, faculty, staff, and parents to succeed in the face of these challenges is impressive and a source of pride for us all. This collective demonstration of adaptability, teamwork, and resilience in the face of adversity is a reminder of all the great things we can accomplish when we work together – united in our school’s Mission and Vision.

In this same spirit, your Board of Governors is fully united in the work recently announced by our Head of School Mark Turner to examine, refresh and renew our school’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Please take a moment to read about this work that is underway.

Schools, organizations and governments around the world are engaged in these important conversations as we all strive to learn, evolve and be better. Our quest to ensure SMUS is a diverse and inclusive community where each person has the tools to flourish is critically important. We are committed to this journey. It will make our institution, our students and our community stronger.

The Board of Governors is strongly supportive of the work being carried out by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Working Group established by the school and will be monitoring its progress. We are appreciative of their commitment to consult broadly with open hearts and minds, to compare approaches, to take advice, and to bring forward recommendations for review in the new year.

We look forward to communicating with you further in the months ahead.

Vivat!

Tim McGee, QC
Board Chair
