It is with much sadness that St. Michaels Universty School shares the news of Dr. Skip Dick's passing last Friday, April 10th.
For seven years, LEXIXELEK, Dr. Baptiste Harry “Skip” Dick of the Songhees Nation, shared his warmth and wisdom with SMUS. He brought words of welcome and sat with the SMUS community as we developed new approaches to recognize and value the First Peoples of this land.
He will be remembered for his commitment to honouring and respecting all cultures, and for his steadfast care for the wellbeing of students. At a recent gathering on campus, his characteristic enthusiasm and encouragement were well on display.
SMUS extends its condolences to his wife, Linda, and to his family, of whom he spoke often and with pride. We also recognize Songhees Nation and offer our gratitude for how Dr. Dick enriched so many communities beyond his own. He will be greatly missed.
In honour of Dr. Dick, the flag on both of our campuses will be lowered on Wednesday, April 15, the day of his funeral.
Skip’s family gave permissions via Camosun College to share his funeral information:
- Prayer service: Tuesday, April 14, 7:00 pm at Songhees Longhouse
- Funeral service: Wednesday, April 15, 9:00 am at Songhees Longhouse
In keeping with Salish cultural protocol, images, videos, and audio recordings of Dr. Skip have been temporarily removed from SMUS websites and digital platforms. This practice honours his spirit and provides space for his family, community and loved ones to grieve and support his journey to the spirit world. These materials will remain offline for one year, in accordance with Lək̓ʷəŋən and Coast Salish traditions.
