The accolades just keep rolling in for former St. Michaels University School student and current UVic Vikes basketball standout Avery Geddes ’25.
The 18-year-old, in her first year studying at the University of Victoria, was honoured with the Canada West conference Rookie of the Year award in late February, following an impressive debut season in which she started all 20 league games for UVic and averaged a team-high 35 minutes per game.
Described by UVic Head Coach Carrie Watts as the “ultimate floor general”, the 5-foot-8 playmaker posted 73 assists — seventh overall in the conference — and averaged 10.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.
The awards continued for Geddes earlier this month, as she received U SPORTS national All-Rookie Team honours and was one of four finalists for the U SPORTS Kathy Shields Award (national Rookie of the Year).
Geddes was the second SMUS basketball product in three years to receive Canada West Rookie of the Year and U SPORTS All-Rookie Team honours after Makena Anderson ’23 earned these awards in the 2023-24 season.
In addition, Geddes was honoured in early March for her accomplishments as a senior student athlete at SMUS when she was named one of two Greater Victoria Sports Awards High School Athletes of the Year for her accomplishments during the 2024-25 school year.
In Grade 12, Geddes led the Blue Jags to the 2025 BC AA Basketball Championship, winning tournament MVP honours in the process. Geddes was also a standout performer in varsity field hockey and soccer at SMUS. She will be recognized along with other Greater Victoria Sports Award winners during a ceremony on March 26 at Government House.
In January, Geddes was named winner of the Sybil Verch Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame Award, which goes to an undergraduate female student entering UVic from a secondary school in the Greater Victoria region who competes on a UVic varsity team.
Geddes is following in the footsteps of her mother — SMUS Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Lindsay Brooke, who also made the Canada West All-Rookie Team in 1996-97 and went on to help the Vikes to two national women’s basketball championships.
