Cherry blossoms line the road to School House at the SMUS Richmond Road campus

As we head into Spring Break, there is a sense of momentum across our campus. The brighter days seem to reflect the energy in our classrooms, the music halls, the playing fields and gathering spaces. It reminds me of the purpose and possibility that define this time of year.

The start to 2026 has been both full and affirming for me. From remarkable musical and artistic performances to athletic accomplishments on the courts, water and fields, to the thoughtful teaching and learning, our students continue to demonstrate the passion, character and commitment I’ve come to appreciate, and for which I feel a sense of pride.

Affirmation through Accreditation

Recently, we received the results of our accreditation review through the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). Accreditation is a comprehensive and rigorous process that looks at all aspects of our school including governance, leadership, teaching, learning, wellbeing, operations and long-term sustainability.

The visiting peer review team left us with significantly more commendations than recommendations and it was clear that they identified the strength of our academic programs, our commitment to student wellbeing, our integration of Indigenous perspectives and the professionalism of our operational teams. The review both celebrates our strengths and supports the direction we are already pursuing; as a community, we are proud of this outcome and grateful to everyone whose contributions made it possible. The feedback will inform next steps and planning for the future, as well as the work on the Floreat 2030 Review and Refresh process.

Listening to Shape the Future

As we continue through this Review and Refresh phase of the strategic plan, I wanted to thank the many parents, alumni, faculty, staff and students who participated in surveys and in-person feedback sessions. The thoughtful reflections shared are helping shape our understanding of where we are strongest and where we can grow.

Community voice matters deeply in this work. The strength of our school lies not only in our programs but in our willingness to listen, reflect and evolve together. Thank you again to the many community members involved to date and those committed to next steps.

Meaningful Connections Abroad

As I write this, I am currently travelling in Asia with colleagues from Admissions and Advancement. We have planned stops in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan where we are able to connect with current and prospective families and alumni, strengthening our relationships that are vital to our local and global communities.

These visits are moments of introduction and reconnection, shared pride and renewed partnership and remind us that the SMUS experience extends well beyond our campus and continues to resonate around the world. The most significant impression I continue to receive is the positive impact and pride our alumni feel from their time at the school, and the strong desire to stay connected.

As we head into Spring Break, I am filled with gratitude for the energy, professionalism and generosity of spirit that animate this community each day. At SMUS there is indeed, as a lyric from the recent Senior School production Les Misérables reminds us, “a flame that never dies.”  This is visible in our students’ interactions, performances, athletic pursuits, in their questions and ideas, and in the dedication of the adults who guide and support them.

Wishing you all the best for a Spring Break full of joy and connection.
