Supporting Learners

Our small class sizes ensure teachers are available to support each individual student

Middle School is the perfect age for students to try new things. We are committed to providing unique experiences that enhance the core curriculum through our Exploratory program and elective course subjects. We value creativity, and our teachers use theirs to ensure the learning is hands-on and diverse.

As students discover what interests them, and how they learn, teachers provide the individual assistance they need to get the most out of the experience. We provide individual feedback to support student-identified goals within the learning outcomes.

Feedback looks different here

At SMUS, students reflect, set goals and work towards them with the support of teachers and their parents. Find out why we give feedback, not letter grades in Middle School.

Academic Support

Our learning resource support team helps students conquer obstacles to their academic success. For some students, this help is in the form of workshops and coaching to improve study skills, note-taking and time management. Other students may require more specific support due to learning differences.

Whether students are gifted or they need help with specific learning challenges, our learning resource support program helps all learners reach their full potential.

Health and Wellness Support

Students have confidential support from our school counselling team. The primary focus of our counsellors is to help our students develop skills and strategies to deal effectively with life challenges that can sometimes interfere with their success. Counselling staff work with students on issues such as life balance, wellbeing, conflict resolution and stress management.

Every morning students meet with their Teacher Advisor Group (TAG), which is similar to homeroom. TAG teachers know their students academically and personally, so they stay on top of their academic progress and their engagement outside of the classroom on an individual basis.

SMUS also has a well-equipped, on-campus Health Centre, where nurses are on-call to provide medical assistance and a doctor comes to campus for appointments.
