Applying to ESL (Grades 9 and 10)

Applying for entry into our English as a Second Language Program is a three-step process:

Complete an online application. Please be prepared to submit the following supporting documents:

  • A copy of the two most recent report cards (current year and previous year) provided in English.
  • A copy of the applicant's birth certificate.
  • If applicable, a copy of the applicant’s permanent residency card.
  • If applying to Grade 10, 11 or 12, applicants must request a transcript from their current school be sent directly to SMUS Admissions.

Please Note: St. Michaels University School follows a rolling admission process for Senior School that fills spaces when they become available. Although we accept applications throughout the year, we recommend that you complete an application by early February to help ensure that we have the opportunity to consider your application for entry in September.

Campus Visit (Tour, Testing and Interviews)

Please Note: the application must first be submitted for review by the admissions team. The Admissions office will then contact the applicant to confirm that the student is eligible to visit the school to complete the testing and interviews. This will ensure that your visit to the campus is both worthwhile and personalized.

Campus visits include:

  • a personalized tour of our inspirational facilities conducted by student ambassadors;
  • a meeting with our staff to give you an in-depth understanding of programs and enriched activities;
  • the option to spend a day in classes; and
  • the opportunity to learn more about financial assistance programs.

Visits to the Richmond campus are conducted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please contact Admissions at [email protected] or (250) 370-6170 to arrange for your visit.

Entrance Testing

Entrance tests are completed by all applicants. We recommend that you register for tests with the organizations below in the fall, at the same time that you are submitting an application to attend SMUS. ESL candidates must write one of the following language tests:

On the iTEP exam, applicants should score a minimum as follows to be considered for admission: Grade 9 (3.5) and Grade 10 (4.0-4.5).

TOEFL Junior

Register for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL Junior) and include St. Michaels University School (#7442) as a recipient of the score report. On the TOEFL Junior, applicants should score a minimum as follows to be considered for admission: Grade 9 (overall score near 745) and Grade 10 (overall score near 850).

The Admissions team will review the complete application and decide to place the application in one of three categories:

  1. Offer: the applicant is offered a place.
  2. Wait Pool: the applicant is placed in the wait pool until a space becomes available.
  3. Non-Acceptance: the applicant is not invited to join the school. This may occur when it seems unlikely that a place will be available, or if the Admissions department feels the applicant is not a good fit for SMUS.

In all three cases, a letter is sent to the home as quickly as possible.
