Middle School Athletics and Physical Education

The athletic program at Middle School emphasizes participation, fair play and healthy living.

The athletic program at Middle School emphasizes participation, fair play and healthy living. Our goals – through physical education class and competitive sports – are to provide lots of opportunities, create positive experiences, and prepare students for high school sports.

Students can begin participating in a variety of team sports like basketball, rugby, and volleyball. And while sports start to become competitive, the focus remains on participation and sportsmanship. We hope students will develop lifelong appreciations for sport and physical activities. We want every student to feel like they can be a part of a team, no matter their skill level.

Physical and Health Education

The aim of physical and health education is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to support a healthy and active lifestyle, with physical literacy and physical, emotional and social wellbeing all being emphasized.

In the PE component, students refine and learn basic movement skills, fitness and new athletic skills through individual and group activities and sports (competitive and non-competitive). Through these experiences, students develop skills such as fair play, cooperation, self-discipline and leadership to create a positive environment for physical activity. Once in Grade 8, students go off-campus to be introduced to more activities such as water polo, martial arts, gymnastics, tennis and golf.

In health classes, students get a better understanding of all aspects of physical, emotional and social wellbeing. They gain knowledge, skills and strategies to build respectful relationships and positive self-identity, and to make informed decisions that support personal and community health and safety.
