Enhance your basketball skills with SMUS Camps this summer.
You'll work on dribbling, shooting, finishing, passing, cutting, and pivoting, supervised by experienced coaches. Participate in small-sided games and four-on-four scrimmages to put your skills to the test. Learn about team-based concepts such as movement off the ball, offensive reads, and team defense principles. Our daily routine includes fun challenges and shooting games to support the drills. We are thrilled to announce the legendary basketball coach Ian Hyde-Lay, as a guest coach for our overnight basketball camp. Known for his brilliant defensive strategies and exceptional coaching prowess, Ian brings with him a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach. As a standout guard at the University of Victoria (UVic), he was a key player in transforming the team into a powerhouse under the legendary coach Ken Shields. His impressive journey includes being part of several championship runs, culminating in the unforgettable undefeated season of 1979-80, which led to a prestigious CIAU National Championship title!
After his playing days, Ian dedicated 39 years to coaching at St. Michaels University School (SMUS), where he not only developed basketball and rugby skills in young athletes but also contributed significantly to university programs. His 12 seasons as an assistant coach at UVic helped elevate the team’s reputation within the U SPORTS league to new heights. Ian's coaching experience spans local, national, and international arenas, including his role with Canada’s U20 rugby team!
What truly sets Ian apart is his passionate commitment to mentoring young athletes. He inspires and empowers them to achieve greatness both on and off the court. Participants in his sessions can look forward to a dynamic experience that will elevate their basketball skills and deepen their understanding of the game.

Avery Geddes '25 is one of Vancouver Island’s rising basketball stars and a proud SMUS alumna. A dynamic point guard and natural leader, Avery recently completed an outstanding rookie season with the University of Victoria Vikes, earning Canada West Rookie of the Year honours and a spot on the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team. In her first collegiate season, she started all 20 games, led the Vikes in minutes played and assists, and quickly established herself as one of the top young guards in the country. Described by her coaches as the “ultimate floor general,” Avery combines high-level basketball IQ, leadership, and competitiveness on every possession.
Before joining the Vikes, Avery enjoyed a remarkable career at SMUS, where she led the Jags to the 2025 BC AA Provincial Championship and earned Tournament MVP honours. A multi-sport athlete, she also excelled in field hockey and soccer and was recognized as one of Greater Victoria’s High School Athletes of the Year. Her achievements have continued to earn provincial and national recognition, including being a finalist for the U SPORTS Kathy Shields Award as Canada’s top rookie.
Avery is passionate about helping young athletes develop their skills and confidence through basketball. Excited to return to the SMUS community as a guest coach, she looks forward to sharing her experience as a championship-winning player and U SPORTS standout while inspiring the next generation of players to compete, lead, and love the game.
