Reminder About Masks On Campus

All students in Grades 1 to 12 are expected to bring their own mask to school every day. Students are expected to wear a mask whenever they are sharing a space with anyone from outside of their cohort, including in all indoor and outdoor common areas and hallways. If a student forgets to bring their mask, the school can supply a disposable mask. Our school remains safe and healthy, and it is largely because of how well students have adhered to these measures.

Update on COVID-19 Students Symptoms and Process

Student and staff health continue to be our priority. While SMUS’s focus has been establishing protocols that limit the spread of COVID-19, as we enter cold and flu season, we aim to ensure that we are limiting all viruses coming into the school.

With appreciation for Dr. Bonnie Henry’s announcement regarding the reduction of identified COVID-19 student symptoms, seen on this updated screen form (page 23), please continue to be vigilant and err on the side of caution, keeping your child at home if they have a combination of cold symptoms. According to Dr. Henry’s policy statement, should a student have singular symptoms, not part of the COVID-19 screening, that are well managed and do not limit them from fully participating in their learning, they should be permitted to attend school. However, if your child does exhibit symptoms identified in the screening, please call Island Health to book a COVID-19 test: 1-844-901-8442 (daily 8:30 am–8:00 pm).

Thank you for your support of our community health during these strange times.

September 18, 2020

Island Health has advised us of a new COVID-19 testing option for school-aged students. This new method involves swishing and gargling sterile salt water and spitting it into a collection tube, which will make it easier for children and youth to get tested for COVID-19.
