St. Michaels University School has appointed Becky Anderson as Director of Learning and Innovation, effective August 2027. Currently Director of Junior School, Anderson will move into a newly created Senior Leadership Team role leading future-readiness programming for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Anderson brings 25 years of experience at SMUS as a teacher, houseparent and Director of Leadership Development, and has led the Junior School since 2016. Becky helped pioneer the school’s leadership and Grade 10 Experiential programs, the latter of which turned 20 this year. She has a deep commitment to learning and holds a Master of Education in Leadership Studies and Harvard’s Certificate in School Management and Leadership.
“Becky brings a deep understanding of SMUS, together with the curiosity and ambition to help shape its future,” said Dr. Jeff Aitken, Head of School. “She recognizes the strength of the work already happening here and sees meaningful opportunities to build on it, drawing on the expertise and ideas of colleagues across our community and beyond.”
In this new role, Anderson will work alongside school directors, colleagues and the broader school community to identify the skills that matter most for the future of SMUS’s students and the approaches that best build them. She will also develop partnerships that extend learning beyond the classroom and support faculty professional learning, growth and evaluation.
“The work our faculty, staff and students are doing at SMUS is outstanding, and we are at a pivotal moment,” said Anderson. “This is a chance to boldly shape what comes next while protecting what is essential and enduring about a SMUS education. I am excited to engage in conversations with stakeholders and work closely with my colleagues to create a clear and strategic approach to this work.”
The position supports Floreat 2030, the school’s strategic plan, building on its educational strengths while considering the knowledge, skills and experiences students will need in the years ahead.
Becky’s appointment follows a comprehensive search conducted with Odgers Recruitment that attracted approximately 70 applicants, including more than 20 senior leaders currently serving in Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). Odgers will also support the School's recruitment for the next Director of Junior School.
In the meantime, Becky will continue to lead the Junior School through July before taking up her new role in August 2027.
