Head of School Crossing Guard Duty

As I complete my first full week, I am pleased to share a few reflections. The start of a school year is often filled with anticipation and good energy, and this year has been no exception. I have been struck by the enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the warmth of this remarkable community.

First Impressions

Three themes have stood out clearly to me: the genuine pride people feel in being a part of SMUS, the visible excellence and, importantly, the willingness to reflect together on what excellence truly means, and the warmth and belonging that permeate this community. These qualities are evident across our classrooms, corridors, playing fields, and my daily interactions so far.

Connections

I have enjoyed connecting with families at drop off and during Thursday morning crossing guard duty, as well as the Junior and Middle School BBQs, and the Senior School new parents evening. A highlight was hearing from parents of the excitement of students returning to school—especially those transitioning into Grade 6 and Grade 9. Their comfort and enthusiasm is a credit to the thoughtful planning and people that support our students through these key stages.

With Students

Informally in hallways and fields, and more formally through chapel, I have valued every opportunity to connect with students. In chapel, I shared some of my own beliefs—about relationships, belonging, balance, and putting students first—so they might learn what to expect from me as their new Head of School. And yes, I also spoke about why I believe in making the bed each morning; Middle and Senior School students can tell you more about that!

Looking Ahead

This first week confirms for me that we are poised for a year of growth, learning, and joy. My commitment is to ensure that students feel supported and inspired to do their best—whether that means embracing a new challenge or celebrating small daily accomplishments, as I said in chapel, ‘the little things that add up to something extraordinary’.

Gratitude

I want to thank our faculty, staff, and Senior Leadership Team for their preparation, dedication, and warm welcome. The energy and positivity I’ve witnessed in students are a direct reflection of the care and commitment embedded in the professional culture of the school. I am also grateful to the SMUS Society Board of Governors, Appointed Governors, Advisory Board Members, and committees for their invaluable support during my transition, and as we begin the academic year. I have already seen the commitment and diligence the Board and its committees bring to their work and our community. Their integrity and commitment ensure our governance remains strong, principled, and forward-looking. Finally, I would like to thank the Parents’ Auxiliary for inviting me to their first meeting last night and for all they do in our community, as well as all parents for their efforts to support our students, but mostly for a partnership that is integral to student success and happiness. It truly takes a village.

Thank you for making these first weeks so meaningful for me and so positive for our students. I am excited for the journey ahead and all we will accomplish together.
