Applying to SMUS

St. Michaels University School strives to attract and retain students who:

  • are keen to take on the challenge of an enriched academic program;
  • are eager to participate in a wide variety of activities;
  • have a positive attitude and a global focus;
  • are capable of fulfilling the school's mission; and
  • make up a student body that is economically, globally and ethnically diverse.

The admissions process is designed to help you learn as much as possible about our school at the same time as we become better acquainted with you. The application process varies depending on the grade of the applicant, so please follow the instructions for the grade or program that most interests you.

Applying for entry into Kindergarten is a three-step process:

To submit an application to SMUS you will need to:

Complete an online application. Please be prepared to submit the following supporting documents:

  • A copy of recent pre-school reports, if they are provided by the pre-school.
  • A copy of the birth certificate.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s permanent residency card.

You will also be asked to provide details of a confidential reference.

Campus Visit (Tour, Testing and Interviews)

Please Note: the application must be submitted before you can schedule a campus visit for testing and interviews. This will ensure that your visit to the campus is both worthwhile and personalized.

Once an application has been processed each student will be invited to visit the Junior School with their parents. Each visit will include:

  • a meeting with the Director of the Junior School;
  • a tour of the school with a Welcome Committee member;
  • an individual assessment of the child; and
  • the opportunity to learn more about financial assistance programs.

To arrange a visit to the Junior School campus located on Victoria Avenue, please contact the Admissions Assistant at (250) 598-3922.

Play Workshop

All children will be invited to attend a play workshop that is held at the Junior School. Each child will join a small group of children of the same age and will participate in a play time that allows the Admissions team to observe the children in a social setting. Parents are requested to leave their children at the school for the time allotted and are asked to return to collect their children after an hour.

The Admissions team will review the complete application and decide to place the application in one of three categories:

  1. Offer: the applicant is offered a place.
  2. Wait Pool: the applicant is placed in the wait pool until a space becomes available.
  3. Non-Acceptance: in cases where the Admissions department feels the applicant would not benefit from the program at St. Michaels University School, or if it seems unlikely that spaces will be available, we will notify prospective families as soon as possible.

Applying for entry into Grades 1-5 is a three-step process:

To submit an application to SMUS you will need to:

Complete an online application. Please be prepared to submit the following supporting documents:

  • Copies of the two most recent report cards
  • A copy of the birth certificate.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s permanent residency card.

You will also be asked to provide details of a confidential reference.

Campus Visit (Tour, Testing and Interviews)

As Grades 1-5 are not key entry years at the Junior School, spaces become available only if a current student withdraws. Should a space become available in a particular grade, students who have an application in place may be asked to visit the school.

The students who are invited for a full day assessment will participate in a wide range of activities that help the Admissions team learn more about them. They will visit the Junior School and will spend time completing an assessment, playing outside with a buddy, sharing lunch time with the class, shadowing in a classroom, and touring the school. Their parents will meet with the Director at some point during the same day.

Applying for entry into Grades 6-12 is a three-step process:

Complete an online application. Please be prepared to submit the following supporting documents:

  • A copy of two most recent report cards (current year and previous year) provided in English.
  • A copy of the applicant's birth certificate.
  • If applicable, a copy of the applicant’s permanent residency card.
  • If applying to Grade 10, 11 or 12, applicants must request a transcript from their current school be sent directly to SMUS Admissions.

Please Note: St. Michaels University School follows a rolling admission process for Middle and Senior Schools that fills spaces when they become available. Although we accept applications throughout the year, we recommend that you complete an application by early February to help ensure that we have the opportunity to consider your application for entry in September.

Campus Visit (Tour, Testing and Interviews)

After the online application and supporting documents have been submitted, the information is reviewed by the Admissions team and selected candidates are invited to visit the school for testing, interviews and a meeting with Admissions team members.

Campus visits include:

  • a personalized tour of our inspirational facilities conducted by student ambassadors;
  • a meeting with our staff to give you an in-depth understanding of programs and enriched activities;
  • the option to spend a day in classes; and
  • the opportunity to learn more about entrance scholarships, boarding for Grades 8-12 or financial assistance programs.

Standardized tests are completed by all applicants.

SMUS expects all students to visit the school for entrance testing; however, if you are unable to visit the school, the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is the test we prefer and trust. 2. Wait Pool: the applicant is placed in the wait pool until a space becomes available.
  3. Non-Acceptance: the applicant is not invited to join the school. This may occur when it seems unlikely that a place will be available, or if the Admissions department feels the applicant is not a good fit for SMUS.

In all three cases, a letter is sent to the home as quickly as possible.
