St. Michaels University School strives to attract and retain students who:

  • are keen to take on the challenge of an enriched academic program;
  • are eager to participate in a wide variety of activities;
  • have a positive attitude and a global focus;
  • are capable of fulfilling the school's mission; and
  • make up a student body that is economically, globally and ethnically diverse.

The admissions process is designed to help you learn as much as possible about our school at the same time as we become better acquainted with you. The application process varies depending on the grade of the applicant, so please follow the instructions for the grade or program that most interests you.

Reapply to SMUS

Families who left the school, declined an offer or were unsuccessful in securing a space can reapply. A complete, current application for the desired entry year provides important information.

  • Please use your login credentials (you will not be able to create a new account).
  • If you have forgotten your login credentials, please send an email to [email protected].
  • Complete your online application.
  • A member of the Admissions team will be in touch.

Applications are accepted year-round. However, as demand for places at the Junior School is high and spaces are limited, we encourage you to complete an application 12 months in advance. Our initial Kindergarten admission process will be concluding at the end of November 2020. Should you be applying after November 2020, you are welcome to submit an after-process application for your child and an Admissions Associate will be in touch with you.

Applying for entry into our 2021-22 Kindergarten class is a two-step process:

1. Application

Submit an online application.

2. Campus Visit

Your child’s application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee, who then invite prospective Kindergarten families to visit the Junior School for a meeting with the Director of Junior School. An individual assessment for your child is also included during this visit.

We are looking forward to meeting with you and your child!

The recommended entry year for the Junior School is Kindergarten. However, a few spaces do open each year in Grades 1–5. Strong applicants who are also fluent in English are encouraged to apply. While we accept applications year-round, our Admissions Committee will start reviewing applications in December 2020 – with assessments starting early in the new year. Should you be applying after January 8, 2021, please contact Junior School Admissions for further details.

Applying for entry into Grades 1–5 for 2021-22 is a three-step process:

1. Application

Submit an online application.

2. Campus Visit

Your child’s application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee, who then invites strong applicants to visit the Junior School for assessment. Parents may be invited for an interview with the Director of Junior School.

3. Decision

The Admissions Committee will review the complete application and decide to place the applicant in one of three categories:

  • Offer: the applicant is offered a place and you will need to accept by the deadline provided.
  • Wait Pool: the applicant is placed in the wait pool and notified if a placement becomes available.
  • Non-Acceptance: in cases where the Admissions department feels the applicant would not benefit from the program at St. Michaels University School, or if it seems unlikely that spaces will be available, we will notify prospective families as soon as possible.

Applying for entry into Grades 6-12 is a three-step process:

1. Application

Complete an online application. Please be prepared to submit the following supporting documents:

  • A copy of two most recent report cards (current year and previous year) provided in English.
  • A copy of the applicant's birth certificate.
  • If applicable, a copy of the applicant’s permanent residency card.
  • If applying to Grade 10, 11 or 12, applicants must request a transcript from their current school be sent directly to SMUS Admissions.

Please Note: St. Michaels University School follows a rolling admission process for Middle and Senior Schools that fills spaces when they become available. Although we accept applications throughout the year, we recommend that you complete an application by early February to help ensure that we have the opportunity to consider your application for entry in September.

2. Campus Visit

After the online application and supporting documents have been submitted, the information is reviewed by the Admissions team and selected candidates are invited to visit the school for testing, interviews and a meeting with Admissions team members.

Campus visits by invitation give you:

  • an in-depth understanding of our programs and enriched activities;
  • the opportunity to learn more about entrance scholarships, boarding for Grades 8-12 or financial aid programs.

Please contact Admissions at [email protected] or (250) 370-6170 to arrange for your visit.

Entrance Testing

Standardized tests are completed by all applicants.

SMUS expects all students to visit the school for entrance testing; however, if you are unable to visit the school, the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is the test we prefer and trust. Register and include St. Michaels University School (#6869) as a recipient of the SSAT Scores. We also accept PSAT results.

For those students who have not been attending a school where the primary language of instruction is English for at least 3 years, we request that you register for tests with the organizations below in the fall, at the same time that you are submitting an application to attend SMUS. Candidates must write one of the following language tests:

iTEP 'SLATE PLUS'

Register to take the iTEP Slate Plus online and include St. Michaels University School as a recipient of the score report. On the iTEP exam, applicants should score a minimum as follows to be considered for admission: 5.0 – 6.0 or CEFR B2 – C1.

TOEFL Junior

Register for the TOEFL Junior and include St. Michaels University School (#7442) as a recipient of the score report. On the TOEFL Junior, applicants should score a minimum as follows to be considered for admission: 867-900 or CEFR B2 - C1.

3. Decision

The Admissions team will review the complete application and decide to place the application in one of three categories:

  1. Offer: the applicant is offered a place and you will need to accept by the deadline provided.
  2. Wait Pool: the applicant is placed in the wait pool until a space becomes available.
  3. Non-Acceptance: the applicant is not invited to join the school. This may occur when it seems unlikely that a place will be available, or if the Admissions department feels the applicant is not a good fit for SMUS.

In all three cases, a letter is sent to the home as quickly as possible.
