Weekend Activities in Boarding

A Weekend In Boarding Life

Weekends aren’t spent sitting in front of the TV or playing on the computer; you’ll have fun and unique opportunities on Saturdays and Sundays to try new activities, go on exciting trips, explore and volunteer in your community and enjoy everything living in Victoria has to offer (it’s a lot!).

Off-Campus Weekend Activities

Your weekend in boarding will be anything but boring at SMUS. There is something to do every weekend.

Each pair of Houseparents organize activities - meaning you will have at least six activities to choose from. Examples of the type of things you can do include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Attending hockey, soccer, football and baseball games
  • Beach trips
  • Bowling
  • Cooking classes
  • Dinner downtown
  • Hiking
  • Movie nights
  • Museums & art galleries
  • Shopping
  • Skiing/Snowboarding
  • Swimming
  • Surfing
  • Trips to Vancouver, Seattle & Portland
  • Whale watching

You can also arrange your own activities, like going to the park or having dinner downtown with your friends. If you practice a religion, you can attend worship off-campus.

Pedro describes a trip in Grade 11I really liked my Grade 11 out-trip. It was at the start of my Grade 11 year so I didn’t know a lot of people yet and most of the people in my out-trip were from Barnacle or Winslow, so I could meet a lot of people and get to know them. We went kayaking and surfing in Tofino and we had a lot of fun.

Meanwhile On Campus...

Brunch (a late breakfast/early lunch) is a weekend staple when you live in Victoria – it allows you to sleep in a bit – and SMUS continues that tradition by serving a special boarders’ brunch every Sunday. And then to work off that big meal, you’ll be encouraged to participate in sports and other fitness activities, especially during the friendly but competitive House Games.

One Sunday a month there is also a special chapel, when you will come together with your boarding community to discuss topics, play music and reflect on your time at SMUS.

Of course, it’s not all go go go; you get plenty of quiet time every weekend to relax and get yourself ready for the coming school week. See more of the type of things you can do when you have free time on campus.

A Real-Life Weekend

The hardest part of your weekend will be choosing which of at least six activities to participate in.

Below is a list of activities for just one weekend at SMUS this year:

  • Marshmallow Roast & Field Games
  • Trip for Coffee & to the Beach
  • Guided Naturalist Hike
  • Ice Cream Sundae Bar!
  • Ziplining through a Rainforest
  • Trip to the Movies
  • Trip to Seattle (pictured) for a Baseball Game

Long Weekends & Travelling Home

There are several long weekends throughout the school year when the boarding houses close, and during those times you’ll be able to travel home to visit your family and friends. In the rare circumstance that you can’t travel home, SMUS will help with arrangements for you to stay with one of our local families.

SMUS runs a shuttle bus to drop-off and collect you from the airport before and after long weekends. There is also a special bus every Friday to the ferry terminal.

If you want to go home when it's not a long weekend you'll need permission from your houseparents. Obviously boarding is about being part of a community and you'll only be able to be part of that community by getting involved in weekend activities with your fellow boarders.
